BOTANIC GARDEN INSTITUTE

BOTANIC GARDEN INSTITUTE, a stand­-alone structural unit of the Ufa Federal Research Centre, of Russian Academy of Sciences (UFRC RAS). Located in Ufa. Established in 1932. Located in the park area of Ufa, at the conjunction of the Belaya and Ufa Rivers. Main activities include: the study of phenotypic variation and genetic varieties of Siberian spruce, Sukachev’s larch, Scots Pine, breeding of new apple tree species, development of environmental monitoring principles, karyo­ type of species of different biotopes; study of tissue culture; also, the biology of decorative plants, fodder culture and medical herbs. Area – over 20 ha of open soil; occupied with collections of more than 1.5 thousand species and breeds of plants, incl. more than 600 species of trees and shrubs, 115 medicinal, abt. 200 agricultural, 440 decorative and 180 rare plant species representing the flora of the Urals, Siberia and the Far East. The green house (1350 m²) comprises more than 600 species, forms and breeds of tropical and subtropical plants (ginkgo biloba, pyramidal cypress, Japanese cedar, evergreen magnolia, common yew and others). BGI has created and assimilated production of new seeds of peony, lilac and rose; new cultures — crambe abyssinica, platycarpous trigonella, perfoliate silphium and topinsunflower.
